Location:

Details:

Our Public Forum Debate Teams will conduct a debate on the original November NFL topic for two separate community organizations. Each of the groups draws in excess of 25 individuals at each of their meetings although since this is taking place during the holidays, the crowd could vary. However, each organization will publicize the event to its membership in the hope of drawing a larger than regular crowd. We feel these presentations are significant in that they will provide: A) an opportunity for organizations that might not normally be expected to take a Pro position on the topic to see the topic debated in an organized and thoughtful way and B) provide additional exposure for the speech and debate program at Brecksville - Broadview Heights High School so that the public can see that young people are engaged in areas of current economic and political interest as well as learning to see “both sides” of a controversial topic. We will provide pictures of the event and will attempt to publicize the debates in our local newspaper. Since the Public Forum model will be followed, each debate will exceed 45 minutes. In addition questions will be taken from the audience.

Date:

Grady HS Auditorium

Dec. 9-  Students will discuss rounds debated on the topic through a cross-examination-style debate.  Afterwords they will share what learned and what the challenges of such an action could pose to NYC specifically and the US generally.  Students from the Public Policy & Justice and the Communications & Journalism Academies (new programs at Grady HS) will ask questions and give statements about what they feel should and should not happen in a community suffering from extraordinary events.  Members of the Parent-Teacher- Student Association are also invited to participate and have expressed interest.
Dec. 11- After a public forum debate, debaters will take questions from the community audience about their experience with the original NFL Public Forum topic:  “Resolved: An Islamic Cultural Center should be build near Ground Zero.”  Since all November tournaments in Georgia used this topic, debaters are familiar with the controversy surrounding it.  There will then be a panel discussion with members of the Grady community including UDL/Emory University representatives, community judges that judged debates on this topic at the Grady tournament in mid-November, and City Council Representative Alex Wan (pending).  Questions will come from the moderators and members of the audience.

Because we are a residential school, our school has meetings/presentations after school and at night. The Multicultural Peer Counselors are a group of student leaders who lead events on topics such as multiracial dating and sexism. With cooperation from the MPCs and other student leadership groups, we plan to host public debates, possibly in the public forum style, in front of the student body about, at two separate events, the Islam Cultural Center and airport regulations. After holding a full formal debate, we will have opportunities for questions and answers. With a student body of about 660, we anticipate not only huge student but also teacher and staff member participation.

•  What is the projected impact of not allowing the center to be built near Ground Zero?
•  What is the projected impact if the center is built near Ground Zero?
